Selden L. Whitcomb family correspondence, 1860-1909.

This collection is primarily comprised of correspondence passing among Selden Whitcomb and immediate family (Grinnell, Iowa), including father Abram and sisters Helen (Whitcomb) Hobart, Susan (Whitcomb) Hassell, and Mary Whitcomb. There are also letters between Abram Whitcomb and his siblings Louise and Lincoln, and occasional correspondence between Selden Whitcomb and his former students and colleagues. Mary ("Mamie) R. Whitcomb taught for a time at the Emerson Institute in Mobile, Alabama--that state's first school for the formal education of African-Americans--and was later an assistant at the State Library of Iowa (1894-1896), and assistant Curator of the Iowa State Historical Department (1896-1909). Her letters may be of interest for their mention of some activities related to those positions. Also of note is a letter to Selden Whitcomb from Theodore Roosevelt (Feb. 6, 1894) commenting on an essay of the author in the "Suwanee Review" that addressed the American literary tradition of nature appreciation. Aside from the correspondence in this collection there are also some newsclippings, ephemera, unidentified portraits, and an 1856 diary of an unspecified author.
